- Homebrew headset for my ICOM rig -
2007.01.28 - Made a homebrew headset for my ICOM rig today, started with a 'PC' medium quality headset. Dismounted the original microphone element. The space inside the element 'housing' looks almost like a perfect match for the 'new element'.
(I chouse this headset with this in mind)

I 'abducted' an standard ICOM microphone element from an ICOM HM-36 microphone i got second hand on a fleemarket. I also 'abducted' the standard ferrite bead on the mic-cable, to prevent RF-Feedback in the microphone element.

Perfect match for the 'new element'

A modern headset cable is almost impossible to solder / modify. The ICOM microphone element also need +8 volt supply, for this i need an 'extra' wire. I decided tho leave the 'standard' headset cable as it is, and added an 'extra' cable (Gray) with 2 conductors + shield for microphone-signal and +8 volt.

Connected it up to the front 'MIC' connector on the rig. Added an 'extra' ferrite to prevent RF-Feedback. The LF-Audio for the headset also comes out in the front 'MIC' connector on PIN no# 8.

The tree cables going out from the front 'MIC' connector is:
1. LF-Audio to 3,5mm female plug
2. PTT-Line to homemade ptt-box
3. Extra cable (Gray) with 2 conductors + shield for microphone-signal and +8 volt.

Now ready made and Tested, looks like it's working, i return with results and 'Real-Life' QSO reports. I'm using the 'Speaker off' switch on my external ICOM SP-23 speaker to 'mute' audio in the shack when using the 'NEW' headset.

Go Back!
