Project #3 - Dual Polarization Quad

By SM2YER Goran / Sweden - October 1999

In this Article I describe My Antenna project,- The dual polarization Quad.

Why dual Polarization?
I chouse this antenna because it gives me an solution to several of my demands of an antenna,- first i needed an directional antenna for working both DX-QSO on the Skip and Long distance local QSO with vertical ground-wave.

The dual polarization Quad-Antenna gives me the following advantages...

  • High forward gain
  • Good front to back ratio
  • Minimum side loob pattern
  • Both Vertical and Horizontal polarization of the RF-Wave emission
  • Possible to mount on the same boom
  • Need of only One Mast and Rotator

    ...And also some Disadvantages
  • High Wind sensitivity
  • Relatively Difficult to tune
  • Quite expensive to build (Note that I use high quality material)
  • NOT suitable as the first antenna project for beginners
  • The antenna is quite heavy!.
  • Your Antenna Tower/Mast must handle medium to large antennas.

    The QUAD in the SKY!

My QUAD - Assembled and ready for the big TEST-Run,- first some problems with SWR on higher frequencies and then som more problems with the wires in the loops? Read al about it!

I had to do quite some brain exercise before i solved the problem,- and this 'monster' started to give me some Payback!!
